In 340 BC, the architect Polycleitus, according to Pausanias, builded the theatre of Epidaurus in ravine. Of all the ancient theatres, Epidaurus theatre is the most beautiful and best preserved. Destined for the fun of patients had a capacity of 13,000 spectators. Divided into two parts, 21 rows of seats for common people and 34 rows for the priests and rulers. The excellent acoustics, but also the spectacular preservation contributed to the creation of the Epidaurus Festival. An institution that has been going on for many years.

Small Theatre of Epidaurus

On the Acropolis of the ancient city of Epidaurus on the slope, was established in an earlier period of Asclepius, the small theatre, which was used for the public to express their needs to the rulers. Also it was used for the events of the Dionysian cult, so it was dedicated to the God Dionysus. From the dedicatory inscriptions, the theatre was built from the sponsorships of the prominent rulers and elite people of the local community at the time. Characteristic of the theatre are the inscriptions, which are a real - living museum.

Each July many important musical events of the Ministry of Development, which incorporates the program of summer cultural activities, take place.
