Delfoi

You are here

At the foot of Mount Parnassus lies the worldwide known sanctuary of Delphi, which was the most famous oracles in ancient Greece. Delphi was the navel of the earth. According to legend, two eagles sent out by Zeus from the ends of the universe to find the navel of the world, and for many centuries Delphi was the cultural, religious center and symbol of unity for the Hellenic world. The history of Delphi begins in prehistory and in the myths of the ancient Greeks. According to tradition, Delphi was sacred to Mother Earth and was guarded by the terrible serpent Python. Apollo killed Python and its own sanctuary founded by Cretans who arrived at Kirra, the port of Delphi, accompanied by the god transformed into a dolphin. This myth about the sovereignty of Apollo survived festive representations made in Delphi, the Septiria, the Dolphins, the Thargelia, Epiphany, and, of course, the famous Pythia, which celebrated to commemorate the victory of the death of Python and comprised musical and athletic competitions.
