Athens

Athens is the historical capital of Europe, from the Neolithic era until now which never stopped to be inhabited. The climax of Athen's fascinating history,came in the 5th century. B.C. (the "Golden Age of Pericles"), when the values and culture exceeded the confines of the city and gained universal radiation. Political thought, theater, arts, philosophy, science, architecture and so many other forms of intellectual thought, reached an epic climax in a unique, world history, period of intellectual fulfillment.
Thus, Athens was the matrix of western civilization, while innumerable Greek words and concepts such as democracy, harmony, music, math, art, gastronomy, architecture, logic, love, euphoria and hundreds of others, enriched many languages and inspired different cultures.
In the centuries, the city experienced various conquerors, who left their traces in monuments of distinctive prestige and charm, creating a rare historical palimpsest. 1834 was declared the capital of the modern Greek state, starting with the aftermath of the classical past, but in the intervening two centuries evolved into a modern metropolis with unrivaled charm and high interest.
